About The Farm
Welcome to Mesquite Valley Farm
We are a small homestead farm located in Sierra Vista, Arizona. We ethically and humanely raise chicken for eggs and meat, organically-grown produce, and Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats for our dairy. Because we are small, we encourage you to sign up for our Farm News to be notified when we have farm goods available for sale.
Laying hens were the catalyst for this farm adventure, so it’s no wonder we have a relatively large flock of birds here on the farm. Our birds have a super-sized yard with lots of shade and cover from our mesquite groves. We feed our hens a quality standard feed, occasional kitchen scraps, fruits/veggies, flowers, and herbs from the garden. Eggs are collected several times daily so they remain clean and unblemished. We do not wash the bloom off the eggs, so when you get a carton of our eggs, you should rinse each egg with warm water before cooking.
There’s a science to raising good chicken, and it begins with the right bird, quality feed, and meticulous care. We never use antibiotics or other medications when raising our birds. When the chicks are old enough, they go into spacious mobile pasture pens we call tractors. We move these tractor pens daily to provide the birds with clean ground, fresh vegetation, and bugs to forage for. We provide a quality diet that exceeds their nutritional needs for good growth and a healthy quality life. Our birds are also fed fresh goat milk daily from our dairy goat herd to boost fat quality and enhance their flavor. Once the birds are at a good weight, we humanely butcher in small batches to ensure they are clean, well-dressed, and appropriately aged. We do all this so our customers can enjoy prime quality locally-raised chicken. Taste the difference!
Currently, we maintain a small but rapidly expanding garden. We have spent several years perfecting our skill of organically growing in this challenging desert environment. We utilize drip systems to efficiently water with minimal water usage. We practice regenerative agriculture methods with a no-till holistic growing method focusing on improving the soil to support healthy plant growth. We only use our homemade compost from the waste of our chickens, goats, and crops. We combat pests by inter-cropping with flowers and herbs that draw in beneficial insects and by covering our leafy crops during the heavy pest seasons. If we spray, we use products approved for organic growing methods only and pay specific attention to methods that do not harm our beneficial insects or soils. We believe healthy plants should withstand light pest pressure and still produce abundantly.
We raise quality ADGA-registered Nigerian Dwarf goats for our dairy needs. We have a sister site at https://mesquitevalleycaprines.com that highlights our herd. We typically have 8-10 goats in milk at a time and make our own soap, yogurt, cheese, cream, and dairy products. If you’re a fellow homesteader who wants to add dairy to your homestead, please check out our animals on our sister site. We selectively breed for quality dairy attributes such as high butterfat and milk solids for cheese making, as well as, quantity. We also focus on docile, friendly temperaments that are easy to train on a milk stand and are wonderful pets too. We back up our animals’ abilities with monthly verified DHIA milk testing. We also sell super-friendly, in-your-pocket pet goats. Want a couple of helpful buddies that follow you around your homestead? We have that, too! Reach out to us; we love to talk goats!
